Exam Pattern

The SSC CHSL selection process consists of Tier 1 (CBT), Tier 2 (CBT + Skill/Typing Test), and Document Verification.

Tier 1 Exam Pattern

Tier 1 is an objective, multiple-choice screening test. Marks obtained in Tier 1 are used for shortlisting only and are not counted for final merit.

1. General Intelligence and Reasoning

  • Analogy: Semantic, Symbolic/Number, and Figural Analogy.
  • Classification: Semantic, Symbolic/Number, and Figural Classification.
  • Series: Semantic, Number, and Figural Series.
  • Logic & Reasoning: Symbolic Operations, Trends, Space Orientation, Venn Diagrams, Drawing Inferences.
  • Visual Reasoning: Punched hole/pattern folding & unfolding, Figural Pattern completion, Embedded Figures.
  • Cognitive Skills: Critical Thinking, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence.
  • Problem Solving: Word Building, Coding-Decoding, Numerical Operations.

2. English Language

  • Grammar: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Improvement of Sentences, Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect Narration.
  • Vocabulary: Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings, Idioms and Phrases, One Word Substitution.
  • Comprehension: Shuffling of Sentence parts, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

3. Quantitative Aptitude / Mathematical Abilities

  • Number Systems: Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and relationships between numbers.
  • Arithmetic: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership, Mixture and Alligation, Time and Distance, Time and Work.
  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities, elementary surds, graphs of linear equations.
  • Geometry: Triangles (centres, congruence, similarity), circles, chords, tangents.
  • Mensuration: Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone/Cylinder, Sphere, Hemisphere, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric ratios, complementary angles, heights and distances, standard identities.
  • Statistics & Data Interpretation: Tables, Graphs, Histogram, Frequency Polygon, Bar diagram, Pie chart, Mean, Median, Mode, Standard Deviation, and Simple Probability.

4. General Awareness

  • Current Affairs: National and international importance.
  • History & Geography: History, Culture, and Geography of India and neighbouring countries.
  • Polity & Economy: Indian Polity and Economic Scene.
  • Science & Policy: General Policy and Scientific Research.
  • Static GK: Awards and Honours, Books and Authors, Sports.

5. Computer Knowledge (Tier 2 Only)

  • Basics: CPU, Input/Output devices, memory organisation, back-up devices, ports, Windows Explorer, keyboard shortcuts.
  • Software: Windows Operating System, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
  • Internet: Web browsing, searching, downloading/uploading, email management, e-banking.
  • Networking & Security: Networking devices and protocols, hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans, and preventive measures.

6. Skill Test / Typing Test (Tier 2 Only)

  • DEO (Dept/Ministry): 15,000 key depressions per hour (3,700–4,000 depressions) in 15 minutes.
  • DEO (Outside Dept/Ministry): 8,000 key depressions per hour (2,000–2,200 depressions) in 15 minutes.
  • LDC/JSA: Qualifying typing test for 10 minutes.
